Summary Data

All summary data used by Swarm-Aurora is available from a browsable data tree via HTTPS or anonymous FTP (https://data.swarm-aurora.com). The data tree is organized into year subdirectories, and within each there are 365 or 366 day subdirectories. Each day subdirectory has within it a subdirectory for each project (e.g., themis-asi, rgb, miracle, ago, rego, swarm, rbsp, themis, etc.) that summary data exists for that day. For the ASI programs, this consists of JPEG files for each one hour keogram and daily keogram. For the satellite programs, this consists of ASCII ephemeris and summary files for one dimensional time series (e.g., Swarm FGM/ASM FACs), and JPEG files for 2D summary data (e.g., spectra from Swarm EFI).

The directory may be viewed and explored using a standard web browser at https://data.swarm-aurora.com

The FTP site is ftp://ftp.swarm-aurora.com. Please note that modern browsers do not support this protocol anymore, so dedicated tools are needed (ie. Linux command line, FileZilla, WinSCP, etc.). If you are prompted with a login screen, please use the username "anonymous" and no password.

These data are open, however, please note that:

  1. these are summary data not meant for use in publications,
  2. these data may be used in e.g. presentations provided the necessary acknowledgements (below).

Acknowledgments for summary data (except ephemeris) used in any presentation:

Swarm EFI David Knudsen or Johnathan Burchill
AGO Harald Frey
MIRACLE Kirsti Kauristie
Rainbow Eric Donovan/Emma Spanswick
REGO Eric Donovan/Emma Spanwick
THEMIS ASI Eric Donovan or Harald Frey (depending on if site is in Canada or US)
TREx Blueline Eric Donovan
TREx Near-Infrared Eric Donovan
TREx RGB Eric Donovan
TREx Spectrograph Eric Donovan

Acknowledgment for any use of ephemeris data should be to the NASA Satellite Situation Center.

If any of these data are used in a publication, then we respectfully request that the authors check for the formal acknowledgments as required by the relevant program(s).

Type Project Data Product Description
Ground-Based All ASI Arrays Hourly Keograms (primary data product) A keogram is a single-image 2D timelapse representation of images from a camera. For each image taken, a 1 pixel slice from the middle of the image is taken and stacked in left-to-right order.
Satellites LEO Satellites (Low-Earth Orbit) Satellite Trace Satellite position is shown as a geographic footprint of the North and South magnetic field trace.
Satellites HEO Satellites (Highly-Elliptical Orbit) Satellite Trace Satellite position is shown as a geographic footprint of the North and South magnetic field trace. We display both the concurrent and conjugate footprint location, providing the actual satellite position is not near the equator (± 20° lat).

FAST ESA IES (ElectroStatic Analyzer Ion) data is available in the form of one-hour keograms for the year 1998. They can be viewed in the Conjunction Finder.
Satellites Swarm EFI Horizontal and Vertical Keograms The EFI keograms are a visual representation of the column sums of the vertical and horizontal components of the TII sensor. Additionally, there is a bar along the top of each keogram illustrating the quality of the data. The colour grey corresponds to ion flow measurements which lie outside the nominal measurement range of ± 4 km/s. The colour orange corresponds to "calibration level 0" and should not be used in scientific publications except for research into TII imaging anomaly, calibration and validation studies. The light blue colour correspond to "calibration level 1" and may contain significant uncorrected biases. Finally, the colour green corresponds to "calibration level 2" which represents good quality data.
Satellites Swarm FGM/ASM FAC traces The FAC plots are a single satellite approximation of the field-aligned currents from the Swarm satellites. It is a level 2 data product available for download from ESA's EarthLink.
Satellites ePOP Instrument Operations Operational times for each instrument on the ePOP satellite
